The first prize was awarded ex aequo to primary school in Minori for the school newspaper and to primary school in Positano for the manuscript book, there were also 8 special recognitions. Furthermore, during the final ceremony that took place in the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Maddalena of Atrani, Scalinatelle (“little stairs”)- an”architecture of the heart” of the children of the Amalfi Coast- were consecrated.
437 students who participated in the fifth edition showed their love and appreciation of the territory, sent a message to the adults that it is important to protect the environment and respect it more, and honored Francesca, a young woman died in the flood of September 9, 2010. Students from the classes III A and III B of the Istituto Comprensivo Statale of Positano and Praiano, after climbing 356 steps up to the Campola, also planted a tree in her memory.
“Francesca is our angel – recalled Carmine Satriano, parish priest of the Collegiate, during the gathering at the square, in front of the artwork of Pirozzi that commemorates Mansi – and she will guide us and show us how to love and protect more this land“.
The steps of Atrani were kind of the hallmark of the day: students, teachers, parents and municipal administrators set out from the square trough the characteristic alleys of the city to the Collegiate. A small exhibition of the artwork, such as photos, drawings, poems and stories, has “introduced” the audience to the award ceremony. “This is an award that pushes us to remember – said Lello Mansi, father of Francesca – and to ‘not forget’ means also doing everything to prevent such tragedies from happening again“.
Also the environmental aspect of this award has become more important over the years: “We thank the organizing associations (Italy Nostra Salerno, ACARBIO and Club per UNESCO Amalfi, ed) – said Luciano de Rosa Laderchi, mayor of Atrani – remembering also means always keeping in mind that we need to do everything in our power to improve and protect what surrounds us. The awareness that we live in a fragile environment that shouldn’t be changed has increased over the past years”. Susy d’Afflitto Camera, the president of Fai Salerno, Angela Ruocco of Italia Nostra Salerno and Gioacchino di Martino, the vice president of the Center of Culture and History of Amalfi also wanted to remember the important role of keeping the memory alive. An eternal flame that indicates “the right way”.
“The award ceremony is a final summary of the projects, all very interesting and well prepared, submited individually by the schools – highlighted Michela Manzoni, the president of the Award who, together with Maria Rosaria Sannino, a journalist and the president of the Club per UNESCO Amalfi, had led the jury- we believe that commitment of the school of the Amalfi Coast is the source of their motivation”.

Students of the Primary School in Minori (Istituto Comprensivo di Maiori-Minori), under the wise leadership of their teacher Rosa De Riso, have chosen to dedicate a special number of their school newspaper to the topic proposed by this year’s edition of the Prize. By doing that, they have expanded the audience of their readers, including the whole community of adults of their city and the Coast. An ambitious project, which required time, work and great commitment. The research was conducted in a very coherent way, and all was written in an beautiful language without any errors: admirable! The interviews give a real insight into a daily life of the local people with their needs, fatigue, emotions, pride and vital joy: you enjoy it from the first to the last word.
Second prize
ISTITUTO COMPRENSIVO “GIOVANNI PASCOLI” OF TRAMONTI
Classes II A, II B, II C SECONDARY SCHOOL
TEACHERS: MARIA TERESA MANSI AND MADDALENA AMATO
The students of the classes II A, II B, II C of the Secondary School of Tramonti, coordinated by Maria Teresa Mansi and Maddalena Amato, wrote and realized a power point presentation that can be enjoyed like a small film. It is based on a diary read in an expressive way by a girl that’s about to leave the Amalfi Coast. The soundtrack is captivating, and pictures of the lyrical I, always from behind, emphasize that the true protagonist is the landscape and the man who alters it. This project shows how important it is to be prudent and responsible when exploiting the resources of the area in which we are leaving.
Third prize
LICEO SCIENTIFICO MARINI- GIOIA of AMALFI
Classes I B and II A
TEACHER: MIMMA CAMELIA
We appreciate the long-awaited participation of the junior high schools of the Amalfi Coast, this year finally represented by the classes I B and II A of the LICEO SCIENTIFICO MARINI- GIOIA of AMALFI, both coordinated by Mimma Camelia. A new, fresh approach, attention to the detail and remarkable technical skills have resulted in a digital project, the meeting of two generations: a young girl who asks questions and an elderly (in this particular case grandmother)- who gives the testimony of her own experience. The second project, as can be expected from humanists, revolves around literature that sharpens the gaze, makes one more sensitive and builds the heritage of knowledge of young people. The projects of the two classes, as they are complementary, will be rewarded as a unitary whole.
